The old town of Altamura

Two point three kilometres. Altamura is a working city, not a village kept tidy for people passing through: the market, the evening passeggiata, people who actually live in the centre. Frederick II founded the cathedral in the thirteenth century, and it is still where the town gathers.

The claustri open off the streets around it: enclosed courtyards reached through a single passage, where whole clusters of families once lived. They are the most Altamuran thing there is, and they are on no postcard. Then there is the bread, which has a DOP of its own. The old town is 2.3 km away.
